Mable Slate Wine has arrived in Georgia, and the label carries the character of California's North Coast with it. Bacco Fine Wine, the Atlanta-based importer and distributor, is now bringing the wine to restaurants, wine shops, and event venues across the state. For trade buyers who have spent years building lists around Napa and Sonoma, this is a chance to add a California North Coast wine that reflects a much wider and more varied growing region.
What the North Coast AVA Actually Covers
California's North Coast is an American Viticultural Area, commonly called an AVA, established in 1983. It encompasses grape-growing regions in six counties located north of San Francisco: Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, Solano, and Sonoma.
The scale of the appellation is the whole point. A single North Coast designation stretches across coastal hillsides, inland valleys, and mountain vineyards, which is why two bottles carrying the same regional label can taste entirely different from one another. Buyers who treat the North Coast as one flavor profile miss what makes the region useful on a wine list.

More Than Napa and Sonoma
Napa Valley and Sonoma anchor the reputation of the region, and most buyers know those two names before any others. They are far from the complete picture. Mendocino and Lake County sit right next door and are frequently described as up-and-coming alternatives to Napa and Sonoma, each with a growing identity of its own.
Further north, Trinity County ranks among California's most northerly wine regions, sitting roughly 65 miles (105 kilometers) south of the border with Oregon. It is a remote, mountainous county, and that distance and elevation help explain how far the North Coast appellation reaches beyond the valleys most diners recognize.
In Anderson Valley, Goldeneye, Navarro, and Baxter are three of the best-known producers and are regularly listed among the must-visit stops in North Coast wine country. Those names matter to trade buyers because they signal depth. The North Coast is not two counties and a handful of household labels. It is a layered region with producers worth following in almost every direction.
